Need for Speed 4: Road Challenge (Windows/PC version) is a 1999 arcade-style racing game published by Electronic Arts. In Europe and some regions it was released as Road Challenge, while in North America it is known as Need for Speed: High Stakes.

Story & Setting

There isn’t a deep story — it’s mostly about rising through the ranks of underground and professional racing. You start with a basic car and work your way up by winning races, earning cash, and acquiring better vehicles. The atmosphere mixes street racing vibes with more organized tournament events across scenic locations in the US and Europe.

Gameplay

  • Career Mode — The biggest new addition. Complete tournaments and events to earn money. You can buy, sell, and upgrade cars. The PC version organizes events into tiers that unlock progressively.
  • High Stakes Races — Risk your own car in one-on-one bets against tough opponents. Win and you get their car; lose and you lose yours.
  • Hot Pursuit — Iconic mode where you race while evading (or playing as) the police with sirens, roadblocks, and helicopters.
  • Cars — Features a good selection of late-90s icons like the Ferrari F50, McLaren F1, Porsche 911 GT2, Chevrolet Corvette, BMW Z3, and more. Cars can be damaged, and damage visibly and mechanically affects performance (a big innovation at the time).
  • Tracks — 19 tracks with different layouts, including city streets, mountain roads, coastal highways, and countryside routes. Variable weather and time of day add variety.

The handling is arcade-friendly but with more realism than earlier NFS games, delivering an excellent sense of speed. The PC version has some differences from the PlayStation one, including a more structured career and slightly different car/track selection. It supports multiplayer (split-screen and online for up to 8 players at the time).

Originally released for Windows 95/98, it can still run on modern PCs with some compatibility tweaks or patches. It’s considered one of the best and most influential classic Need for Speed games, especially for introducing meaningful progression, car ownership, and risk-reward mechanics that later titles built upon.

If you enjoy old-school racing games with personality, police chases, and a rewarding career, this one is a fan favorite even today.
